Boron nitride is a sophisticated synthetic ceramic that comes in powder and solid form. Boron nitride is a genuinely exceptional material because of its special qualities, which include high heat capacity, exceptional thermal conductivity, ease of machining, lubricity, low dielectric constant, and enhanced dielectric strength.

Boron nitride is commonly referred to as "white graphite" in its solid form due to its comparable microstructure to graphite. However, unlike graphite, boron nitride is a better electrical insulator with a greater oxidation temperature. It has strong thermal conductivity and thermal shock resistance and can be machined to close tolerances in almost any shape. It is ready to use after machining and does not require any additional heat treatment or fire processes.

Advantages:

  • Excellent machinability

  • Low density

  • High heat conductivity

  • High electrical resistivity

  • Good chemical inertness

  • Excellent thermal shock resistance

  • Corrosion-resistant

  • Nonwetting

  • Low dielectric constant (k=4)

  • Anisotropic (thermal conductivity varies between parallel and perpendicular planes to the pressing direction).

  • High-temperature materials

  • Dielectric breakdown strength >40 KV/mm

Applications:

1. High-Temperature Metallurgy and Semiconductor:

  • Evaporation Boats: Used for vacuum aluminum film deposition, a crucial component in the packaging business (e.g., food packaging bags).

  • Metal melting equipment includes crucibles, pipes, and nozzles for delivering molten aluminum, as well as distributors and valve components for melting high-purity metals or semiconductors.

  • Horizontal Continuous Casting Separation Rings: Ensure smooth demolding and surface finish during continuous casting of steel or copper.

2. Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Thermal Management:

  • Heat Dissipation Substrates: Used in high-power LEDs, radio frequency microwave devices, IGBT modules, and other applications to achieve the best possible balance of electrical insulation and thermal conductivity.

  • High-voltage electrical components include high-temperature insulators, plasma arc nozzles, and high-voltage switch accessories.

3. Aerospace and Defense:

  • Radar Windows and Radomes: Exhibit excellent wave-transparent properties (transparent to microwaves) and can withstand aerodynamic thermal shock, used in missiles, radar, and other equipment.

  • High-Temperature Lubricants: Used in bearings, guide rails, and other harsh conditions.

Processing Precautions:

Although boron nitride is known as an "easily machinable ceramic," the following points still need attention during actual processing:

  • Tool selection: High-speed steel or carbide tools are recommended.

  • Dry storage: Boron nitride is slightly hygroscopic (particularly in grades with B2O3 additions). When exposed to high temperatures, incorrect storage and moisture absorption can cause cracking or bubbling.
